Settings

Time: Present-20 Century
1. Steve boasted like he’d beaten Lebron James one-on-one
2.It was like one of those corny TV shows.
Place: Bluford, California
1.Martins little brother named Huero goes to Bluford Middle School.
2.Martin Luna arrived at Bluford High School, and that’s like Montclair because we have middle schools and we have Montclair High School, so that means it must be like the towns high school and Bluford’s the town in California, so that’s what I mean, so we have Bluford High School and we have Montclair High School.

Vicky- is Martin Luna’s girl friend and she is beautiful, sensitive and very courageous because she is always their for Martin, and she is loving and caring.
Theme

“Always be prepared to lose someone or something”
“The main Idea is to always be prepared.”
1. I think this a good theme for the book because Martin was not prepared to lose his brother Huero and to be in the case that he’s in right now, because Martin has to deal with Frankie and to end the war between them and to get back his revenge from Frankie because the bullet that Huero took was meant for Frankie.
2. Martin was not prepared for his dad to abandon him when he was younger , and for it to be so hard on his mom.
3.Martin did not expect his mom to be alone by her self going through the pain and struggle, because she is trying to keep Martin out of trouble and she misses her son Huero which passed away.

Major conflicts

Internal Conflict -The internal conflict involves Martin. He is struggling to decide whether he should stay away from Frankie or to face him one more time. The conflict is resolved when he has a talk with Mr. Mitchell and, Mr. Mitchell tells him to make the right decision and so he did the right thing and stood face to face with Frankie one more time and then at the end, Martin ended up beating Frankie.

External Conflict - The external conflict involves Martin. His goal was to help his friend Eric because his friend was getting pushed around and beat up by other students. His obstacle was to help his friend out with out getting into trouble and getting expelled. Martin got so angry that he ended up hitting a teacher, by accident and he got in trouble and got expelled, the conflict was resolved when Martin proved he could be a good person and got excepted by into school.

Literary Techniques

Simile- A comparison between two things using the words “like”
or “as“.
Ex.1 pg.11
“Time was running out like blood from a cut Martin said”
This is a simile because Martin is comparing time to blood because time is going by quickly and blood comes out really fast from a cut using “like”
Ex.2 pg.120
“My heart started pounding like a bass drum said Martin”
This is a form of a simile because Martin is comparing his heart to a bass drum because his heart is beating so hard using “like”
Ex.3 pg.5
“They looked at me as if I had just shot someone said Martin”
This is a simile because Martin is comparing how everyone was looking at him to as if he had shot someone because students were staring at him for a long time using “as”

Metaphor- A comparison between two things, calling one the other.
Ex.1 pg.46
“ If you lie with dogs, your gonna end up with fleas”
This is a metaphor because some people are being compared to dogs because they hang around with the wrong people and then they get themselves in trouble.
Ex.2 pg.69
“ By the time I made it home, fear was digging at me the way rats clawed through the walls of our old apartment said Martin”
This is a form of metaphor because Martins fears were compared to the way rats clawed through the walls of his old apartment.
Ex.3 pg.55
“Too many young people swallowed up by drugs, guns, and gangs“.
This is a metaphor because young people are compared to being swallowed up by drugs, guns, and gangs meaning that they are getting attached to drugs, guns and gangs, and just wont stop doing drugs and using guns and getting into gangs.

Hyperbole- An extreme exaggeration (usually impossible) intended for emphasis.
Ex.1 pg.116
“My heart jumped said Martin”
This is an Hyperbole because its impossible for your heart to jump, the author is just exaggerating the fact that Martin got nervous.
Ex.2 pg.24
“His words were a slap in my face said Martin”
This is an hyperbole because it is impossible for words to slap you in the face, the author is just exaggerating the fact that the words that Martin heard had a great impact on him.
Ex.3 pg.48
“ Anger raced through my veins”
This is an hyperbole because it is impossible for anger to race through your veins, the author is just trying to exaggerate the fact that Martin was angry.

Exposition- A technique authors use to tell you what is going on in the story through context clues.
Ex.1. Pg.116
“She knew what I was going to ask her next, I could see it on her face said Martin”.
This is an exposition because when Martin said she knew what he was going to ask her, and that he could see it on her face, when he said he could see it on her face, that was the context clue that made you knew that she knew what Martin was going to say next without he author telling you.
Ex.2. Pg.53
“His eyes dropped, his shoulders slumped forward , and then he nodded.
This is an exposition because when Mr. Martin eyes dropped and his shoulders slumped forward, and he nodded, you just knew that something had to be wrong, and you figured that out without the author telling you.
Ex.3 Pg.48
“ I shoved a desk aside , my fist clenched, my pulse pounding like a drum in my forehead”
This is an exposition because when Martin shoved his desk aside, and clenched his fist, without the author telling you, you knew that Martin was angry.

Foreshadowing- A technique that authors use to tell you what’s going on in the novel, using context clues and then stating the facts a little later in the story.
Ex.1 pg.7
“And now more blood was about to spill”
This is Foreshadowing because when Martin said and now more blood was about to spill, he was talking about his little brother when he got shot and more blood did start to fall later on in the story.
Ex.2 pg.4
“There’s no way Mr. Gates will ever understand this”
This is foreshadowing because when Martin said there’s no way Mr. Gates will ever understand this, he’s talking about when he is about to get expelled because he hit a teacher which was by accident. He is saying their is no way Mr. Gates the (Bluford School owner) is going to believe Malcolm and his side of the story and later in the story Mr. Gates didn’t believe Malcolm.
Ex.3 pg.118
“I had to face Frankie one last time”
This is foreshadowing because Martin wanted to face Frankie one more time and later in the story he did face him again.
